Use

A. Measuring Tools

Tape Measure

A tape of cloth, paper or steel marked off in a linear scale, as of inches or centimeters, for taking measurements, Also called tapeline

French Curve

A flat drafting instrument with curved edges and several scroll-shaped cutouts, used as a guide in drawing curves when laying out the pattern

L-Square

Used as a guide in drawing straight line when laying out the pattern

Hip Curve

Used as a guide in drawing major curves especially on the hip line when laying out the pattern

Ruler

A straightedged strip, as of wood or metal, for drawing straight lines and measuring lengths. Also called rule.

B. Marking Tools

Tracing Wheel

an instrument with serrated teeth on a wheel attached to a handle. Used to transfer markings from patterns onto fabric with or without tracing paper, this sewing tool also makes slotted perforations.

Tailor’s Chalk

A thin piece of hard chalk used in tailoring for making temporary alteration marks on clothing.

Carbon Paper

-Used to transfer marks from the pattern paper to the cloth

Pencil

Used for marking

C. Sewing Tools

Sewing Box

A box or any container which hold tools for sewing

Emery Bag

Used to hold pin and needle

Wrist Pin Cushion

Used to hold pin and needle

Pins

A short, straight, stiff piece of wire with a blunt head and a sharp point, used especially for fastening.

Needle

A small, slender implement used for sewing or surgical suturing, made usually of polished steel and having an eye at one end through which a length of thread is passed and held.

Thimble

A hard pitted cup worn for protection on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing.

Ripper

One that rips, used to rip excess cloth

Sewing Machine

A machine for sewing, often having additional attachments for special stitching.

D. Cutting Tools

Shears

A cutting instrument. Specifically: (a) An instrument consisting of two blades, commonly with bevel edges, connected by a pivot, and working on both sides of the material to be cut, -- used for cutting cloth and other substances.

Scissors

A cutting implement consisting of two blades joined by a swivel pin that allows the cutting edges to be opened and closed.
